Quick read:

  • There are many unknowns when it comes to fertility treatment. One of the biggest is the total cost of the fertility journey.
  • Many clinics offer packages - but it’s hard to see if there’s any potential extra costs.
  • Extra costs will come from medication, extra consultations, storage of embryos, etc.

Most people don’t know what to expect or what will happen when they start up in fertility treatment. There are many unknowns. A very big unknown is the expenses for treatment: What will the total cost of the fertility treatment be?

IVF package prices can vary, and the treatments and procedures that are included in that price often vary too. Some fertility clinics list their IVF treatment cost at £3,000, but in reality what you end up spending can be closer to £6,000. A good tip is to make sure to check what the clinic includes in their package price and what you might have to pay for separately when you’re researching clinics and prices.

When should you be aware of potential extra costs?

There are several different types of IVF treatment (IVF, ICSI, treatment with donors etc.) - for the purpose of this article, we will look at a standard IVF cycle. A standard fresh cycle of IVF covers treatment where the woman is stimulated, eggs are extracted and fertilised with the male’s sperm, and an embryo is transferred back into the uterus. Any remaining embryos are frozen for future use. Let’s look at where there can be extra costs for treatment.

Medication:

Medication is taken throughout the IVF cycle to stimulate your follicles and to prepare for the embryo transfer, or to support your pregnancy. Medication in your IVF cycle varies depending on a few things, including the protocol and what your specific doctor recommends you. Because of this, the medication cost can range between £400-£3,000 for any IVF round. For that reason, most clinics do not include medication costs in their packages.

Initial tests and scans:

There can be extra costs for:

  • Pre-treatment tests and scans (tests and scans during the diagnostics process)
  • At some clinics there is a fee for the initial consultation

Egg extraction:

There can be extra costs for:

  • Sedation

Embryos:

There can be extra costs for:

  • Embryo culture. This means growing the embryos in the laboratory for two more days at which point they are referred to as blastocyst embryos
  • Storage of embryos and freezing
  • Medication during the embryo transfer

Pregnancy:

There can be extra costs for:

  • Pregnancy scans

All in all, fertility treatment is pricey, but if you make sure to do your research, be aware that there might be hidden costs, and ask the right questions, you’ll be able to avoid getting too many costly surprises along the way.
